Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Suffers 81-60 Setback Against WPI in Home Finale

THE BASICS:

- Score: WPI - 81, MIT - 60

- Records: MIT (6-18, 5-10 NEWMAC), WPI (19-4, 12-2 NEWMAC)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Rockwell Cage)

- The Lead: The MIT men's basketball team concluded its regular season home slate with an 81-60 defeat against WPI on Saturday afternoon at Rockwell Cage. Before the game, MIT recognized its two graduating seniors, Luke Wagner (Austin, Texas) and Jake Jones (Weston, Conn.).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The two teams played a tightly contested first half with the largest lead being a five-point margin by WPI. Two free throws by first year Mike Ewing (Mendham, N.J.) tied the game for the seventh time at 22, but WPI regained a 28-25 lead on an Andrew Lufkin layup with 30 seconds left. A last-second Ewing layup cut the visitor's lead to one after 20 minutes of play.

- After WPI took a five-point lead in the second half, a three from sophomore Tim Minicozzi (Belmont, Mass.) and a layup from first year Merlin Gogolin (New York, N.Y.) made it a 36-35 game. That is as close as MIT would get as WPI pulled away for the 81-60 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Gogolin led MIT with 18 points and grabbed six rebounds. First year Will Bland (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 11 points with two rebounds and two assists. Ewing totaled nine points and three rebounds.

- WPI was led by Justin Molen with 16 points and a double-double from John Adams (15 points, 11 rebounds).
