Baseball Takes Down Tufts, 11-4

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT - 11, Tufts - 4

- Records: MIT (4-3), Tufts (3-2)

- Location: Medford, Mass. (Sol Gittleman Park)

- The Lead: The MIT baseball team earned its first win over Tufts since 2018 as the Engineers powered past the Jumbos, 11-4, on the road on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- After the Jumbos took a 1-0 lead in the second, the Engineers scored four straight runs to take the lead. Senior Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) singled home senior Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.), and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from graduate student Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.). MIT added two more runs in the fourth on a Tufts error and an RBI from senior Tyler Godfrey (Rowley, Mass.).

- Tufts got one back in the bottom of the fourth, but a leadoff homer by Schoenfeld kick-started a three-run fifth for MIT as the Engineers took a 7-2 lead. The Jumbos put up two runs in the bottom of the frame to cut the MIT lead to 7-4.

- Gumbs cleared the bases with a two-out double down the right field line in the seventh to put the Engineers up by six, and sophomore Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) scored the final run for the day in the ninth on a wild pitch as the Engineers took the 11-4 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Four Engineers recorded two hits in the game. Schoenfeld went 2-5 with two runs scored and two RBI from the leadoff spot. Gumbs led MIT with three RBI in the game. Senior Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Zev Moore also had multi-hit games.

- Sophomore Chase Rubin (Arlington, Va.) went the first three innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk. He recorded two strikeouts. Senior Saketh Gabbita (Ashburn, Va.) got the win to improve to 2-0 as he tossed two innings of one hit ball with one walk and two Ks.
