Late Rally Falls Short as UMass Boston Holds on to Defeat MIT, 9-7

THE BASICS:

- Score: UMass Boston 9, MIT 7

- Records: MIT (6-4), UMass Boston (6-6)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Fran O'Brien Field)

- The Lead: Despite a pair of runs by MIT in the bottom of the ninth, it would not be enough as UMass Boston held on to defeat the Engineers, 9-7, in a non-conference baseball game on Monday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- A two-run homer by graduate student Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) gave MIT the lead in the first inning and then the Engineers went up 4-0 in third. A single by senior Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) to centerfield plated junior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) as Schoenfeld later scored on a sac fly to leftfield by Sonandres.

- UMass Boston chipped away at the deficit and eventually three runs in the sixth inning resulted in a 6-4 lead for the visitors. The Beacons increased their cushion with another three-run burst in the following inning as Justin Gouve hit a two-run homer to rightfield and Elliot Miles produced an RBI single to leftfield.

- MIT narrowed the gap to 9-5 in the bottom half of the seventh when Tubbs scored on a double by Schoenfeld to left center. In the ninth, Schoenfeld scored from third on a wild pitch and with runners on first and third, a ground out to the catcher by senior Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) allowed graduate student Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) to cross the plate. The Engineers would not get any closer as a fly out to rightfield ended the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Schoenfeld went 3-for-5, including two doubles, and tallied two RBI and two runs. Kyle Sonandres was 2-for-3 with one homerun, three RBI, and a walk while Jake Sonandres went 2-for-3 and registered two runs as well as a stolen base.

- In four innings, sophomore Chase Rubin (Arlington, Va.) struck out five, allowed six hits, and four runs, two of which were unearned. Sophomore Owen Malone (Portsmouth, R.I.) took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season.

UP NEXT:

- MIT travels to Mitchell College on Tuesday, March 19 for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference game.
