The Lead: In a non-conference match up on a Wednesday afternoon, the MIT baseball team fell to the University of Southern Maine, 16-3, at Fran O'Brien Field.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- The Huskies jump-started a five-run first inning before MIT got on board in the bottom half. Graduate student
Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) singled to centerfield, bringing in senior
Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.). Sonandres later scored courtesy of a wild pitch.
Â
- Southern Maine would get another run in the second inning. The Engineers narrowed the gap to 6-3 courtesy of a home run from senior
Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) in the bottom of the third.
Â
- A seven-run fifth inning helped the Huskies pull away for the eventual 16-3 victory.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Â
- Schoenfeld went 2-for-2 and walked twice while Finch collected his seventh homer of the season. Senior
Karl Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) struck out eight batters but saw his record lower to 2-1 on the year.
