THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 18 Babson 15, MIT 8

- Records: MIT (2-5, 1-1 NEWMAC); Babson (6-2, 2-0 NEWMAC)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium)

- The Lead: No. 18 Babson College outscored MIT, 5-1, in the third quarter to help it pull away for a 15-8 NEWMAC men's lacrosse victory on Saturday. Senior Jack McCordic (Medfield, Mass.) paced the Engineers with three goals and one assist while Seamus Rooney, Jared Rainville, and Camden Matthews each produced a hat trick for the Beavers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Rooney put the first two goals on the board with the help of Topher Bower and Luke Wang in the first three minutes of the game. Junior Dylan Nelson (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) collected his first goal on the season at the eight-minute mark. Jacob Tauss scored two minutes later courtesy of an assist from Wang, but sophomore Bryce Metalios (Old Greenwich, Conn.) scored on a man-up opportunity with the assist from McCordic. Connor Karsh registered his own man-up goal and Rooney scored on the final second from a successful clear attempt with a full-field assist from Bower, giving Babson a 5-2 lead.

- The Tauss-Wang connection returned two minutes into the second stanza. McCordic converted another extra-man goal five minutes later with the assist from sophomore Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.). Bleil collected a goal himself as senior Heath Nilsen (Carlsbad, Calif.) assisted, cutting the deficit to 6-4 at the 4:21 mark. Rainville increased the Beavers' margin with an unassisted goal as time expired.

- Rainville scored the first two goals of the third quarter to complete the hat trick, with one being a man-up goal. Matthews collected two man-up goals 30 seconds apart as Rooney assisted on both, expanding the lead to 11-4 with 9:16 on the clock. McCordic responded with his second goal of the game, with the assist from sophomore Garrett Campagna (Lancaster, Pa.). Matthews then went on to notch the second natural hat trick of the frame.

- Eight seconds after winning the opening faceoff of the fourth quarter, James Turco found the back of the net. Cooper Chapman scored a minute later while Sammy Kalishman produced the final goal for Babson, resulting in a 15-5 advantage with 10:20 remaining in the game. Man-up goals by McCordic and Bleil bookended a solo effort by Nilsen to wrap up the scoring.
