Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Hamilton, 17-11

THE BASICS:

- Score: Hamilton College 17, MIT 11

- Records: MIT (2-6); Hamilton (5-2)

- Location: Clinton, N.Y. (Withiam Field)

- The Lead: A 5-1 run during the first half of the fourth quarter helped Hamilton College pull away for a 17-11 win over MIT in a non-conference men's lacrosse game on Wednesday night. Senior Heath Nilsen (Carlsbad, Calif.) and sophomore Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.) both paced the Engineers with three goals and one assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Hamilton jumped out to a 6-1 lead as sophomore Garrett Campagna (Lancaster, Pa.) produced MIT's only goal of the first quarter.

- The Engineers chipped away at their deficit, as they narrowed the gap to 7-6 heading into halftime. Nilsen produced two goals and an assist, Bleil scored twice, Campagna earned two assists, and senior Jack McCordic (Medfield, Mass.) notched one goal and one assist.

- MIT carried the momentum into the third quarter as it opened the frame with three straight goals. Bleil scored on a pass from senior Bennett Stankovits (Rumson, N.J.) after 1:18 elapsed and then Bleil found sophomore Bryce Metalios (Old Greenwich, Conn.) for the go-ahead goal at the 12:30 mark. First-year Ashton Axe (Portola Valley, Calif.) increased the Engineers' lead to 9-7 just over two minutes later. The Continentals cut their deficit in half midway through the quarter and then scored twice during the final 58 seconds, reclaiming a 10-9 edge.

- A goal just 28 seconds into the fourth quarter sparked Hamilton's pivotal run that increased its cushion to 15-10 with 7:48 on the clock. Two minutes later, Metalios buried a man-up goal that was set by junior Nick Stiles (New Canaan, Conn.), however, the Continentals tacked on two more goals to secure the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Campagna tallied one goal, two assists, three groundballs, and one caused turnover while senior Luke Chapman (Houston, Texas) collected three groundballs. In net, graduate student David Vapnek (San Diego, Calif.) made seven saves.
