THE BASICS:
- Score: No. 19 MIT 8, U.S. Coast Guard Academy 5
- Records: MIT (6-1, 1-0 NEWMAC); Coast Guard (5-3, 0-2 NEWMAC)
- Location: New London, Conn. (Cadet Memorial Field)
- The Lead: A pair of three-goal periods for No. 19 MIT was enough as it went on to defeat the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 8-5, in its first NEWMAC women's lacrosse game of the season on Saturday afternoon. Seniors
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) and
Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.) powered the Engineers offensively, with both collecting a hat trick and Arterburn assisting on two goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Rabenold scored the first goal of the game after just over five minutes elapsed with the set-up from senior
Grace Harrington (Seattle, Wash.). Coast Guard responded with a goal of their own with 15 seconds left in the opening frame.
- The Engineers controlled the scoring in the second quarter, shutting down the Bears in the process. Arterburn had two unassisted goals of her own during the first five minutes while sophomore
Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) registered a goal of her own at the 5:38 mark.
- Eight seconds into the second half, Rabenold continued the scoring surge for MIT as she was assisted by Arterburn to put the Engineers up 5-1. Coast Guard responded a little over a minute later, but sophomore
Monica Petulla (Natick, Mass.) capitalized on a player-advantage opportunity, finding the back of the net with the help of Arterburn with 12:28 on the clock. The Bears replied with a pair of goals, narrowing the gap to 6-4, however, Arterburn buried a player-advantage free-position goal with 20 seconds remaining.
- Rabenold completed the hat trick courtesy of a feed from Thomas at the 10:53 mark. Just over five minutes later, Coast Guard recorded the final goal of the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Arterburn finished with two groundballs, two draw controls, and three caused turnovers. Sophomore
Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) posted two groundballs as Harrington and junior
Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) both had two caused turnovers.
- In net, sophomore
Molly Dulde (Delafield, Wis.) made nine saves in the first half while only allowing one goal as first-year
Pauline Vien (Brookline, Mass.) notched five saves to seal the deal in the final 30 minutes.
