Springfield Holds off Men's Lacrosse, 13-10

THE BASICS:

- Score: Springfield College 13, MIT 10

- Records: MIT (2-7, 1-2 NEWMAC); Springfield (1-8, 1-2 NEWMAC)

- Location: Springfield, Mass. (Stagg Field)

- The Lead: Despite coming within one goal early in the fourth quarter, Springfield College rattled off three straight goals to create a small cushion as it held on to defeat MIT, 13-10, in a NEWMAC men's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Garrett Campagna (Lancaster, Pa.) powered the Engineers with five goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT built a 2-1 edge in the first quarter. Junior Dylan Nelson (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) connected on a pass from sophomore Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.) after 4:32 elapsed and then senior Heath Nilsen (Carlsbad, Calif.) put the Engineers back in front with 4:12 left in the frame.

- Springfield had a 4-1 scoring edge in the second stanza, resulting in a 5-3 lead at halftime. Campagna netted MIT's lone goal which had tied the score at three at the 8:04 mark.

- Campagna scored two of the first three goals of the third quarter as his second narrowed the gap to 6-5 with 8:51 on the clock. The Pride responded with a 4-1 run, however, Campagna scored with 41 seconds left.

- The Engineers carried the momentum into the fourth quarter as solo efforts by Bleil and Nielsen brought the visitors within 10-9 with 12:28 left to play. Springfield replied with two goals during the next two minutes and then increased its cushion with 2:45 to go. Campagna scored 48 seconds later on a feed from Nilsen, resulting in the 13-10 final score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Nilsen finished with two goals and two assists while Bleil had one goal and one assist. Graduate student Andrew Palleiko (Hopkinton, Mass.) paced MIT with eight groundballs, followed by four from junior Brennan Hoppa (Hampstead, N.H.). In net, graduate student David Vapnek (San Diego, Calif.) collected 12 saves and three groundballs.
