The Lead: Trailing 4-1 heading into the ninth inning, the MIT baseball team scored four runs in the ninth and held off a Chapman rally to complete the comeback victory and earn the 5-4 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- MIT got on the board early with an RBI groundout from senior
Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) that plated junior
Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) in the third.
- A three-run homer from
Austin Dudas in the fifth gave Chapman the lead, and the Panthers tacked on a run in the sixth on an RBI single from
Thomas Golbranson.
- Sophomore
Owen Malone (Portsmouth, R.I.) singled home graduate student
Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) in the ninth to cut the Chapman lead to two, and senior
Tyler Godfrey (Rowley, Mass.) singled home the tying run with his two-run single to right. Graduate student
Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) then singled home Schoenfeld to put MIT back in the lead 5-4.
- With a runner on first, senior
Phillip Hood (Grapevine, Texas) got Dudas swinging, and
Jake Sonandres threw out Golbranson at second to end the game and give the Engineers the come-from-behind win.

Jake Sonandres led MIT with three hits. Godfrey finished with two RBI, two hits, and a run scored.
- Senior
Karl Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) went the first five innings and allowed three runs on two hits. He struck out seven and walked three. First year
Louis Hernandez (Windsor, Conn.) got his first collegiate win with two innings of one-hit ball. Hood notched his first save.
