Baseball Rallies for Comeback Win in DH Split Against Chapman

THE BASICS:
 
- Score:
Game 1: Chapman - 6, MIT - 4
Game 2: MIT - 8, Chapman - 5

- Records: MIT (3-2), Chapman (8-5)

- Location: Orange, Calif. (W.O. Hart Park)

- The Lead: After dropping game one, 6-4, the MIT baseball team scored five unanswered runs to earn another come-from-behind win over Chapman as the Engineers won game two, 8-5, to earn the doubleheader split.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE

- Chapman jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but MIT cut the deficit to one with two runs in the second.
 
- AJ Anzai doubled home two runs in the fourth to put the Panthers up 5-2.
 
- Senior Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) and sophomore Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Isreal) singled home runs to get the Engineers to within one, however, Eli Biehl homered to put the Panthers up two.
 
- Schoenfeld was hit by a pitch to lead off the ninth but was left stranded as Chapman took game one, 6-4.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Senior Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.) led MIT with three hits while graduate student Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) added two.
 
- Sophomore Chase Rubin (Arlington, Va.) fell to 0-1 on the year as he threw 3.1 innings and allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits. He walked five and struck out four. Junior Ethan Siegel (Austin, Texas) finished the game and gave up just one run on three hits with one walk and six Ks.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO

- Senior Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) launched his third long ball of the season in the second to give MIT a 1-0 lead.
 
- Zev Moore and graduate student Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) added RBI singles to give the Engineers a 3-0 lead.
 
- The Panthers scored five unanswered runs, including a three-run sixth, to take a 5-3 lead.
 
- MIT scored four runs in the eighth to take a 7-5 lead. Junior Malachi Soqui's (Castaic, Calif.) pinch-hit double made it a one-run game, and Kyle Sonandres' two-run single regained the lead for MIT. Jake Sonandres' sac bunt plated Schoenfeld to make it a 7-5 Engineer lead.
 
- Gumbs crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the ninth to give MIT an 8-5 lead in the ninth and sophomore Owen Malone (Portsmouth, R.I.) retired Chapman in order in the ninth to secure the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Junior Brian Rapanan (Gurnee, Ill.) went the first four innings for the Engineers and allowed no runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out five. Senior Saketh Gabbita (Ashburn, Va.) got the win with two innings of work. He allowed one run on two hits with a walk and strikeout. Malone tossed two innings for the save, and allowed no hits or walks and recorded four Ks.
 
- Kyle Sonandres led the way with three RBI and three hits in the game. Schoenfeld scored two runs while Zev Moore and Gumbs each had two hits in the game.
 
UP NEXT:

-  MIT heads to Pasadena, Calif. to take on Caltech on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. EST.
