Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Quick Start Propels No. 21 MIT to 17-11 Win over Roger Williams

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 21 MIT 17, Roger Williams University 11

- Records: MIT (3-1); Roger Williams (1-3)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Rockwell Cage)

- The Lead: Seven unanswered goals that spanned the first and second quarters gave No. 21 MIT enough of a cushion as it went on to defeat Roger Williams University, 17-11, in a non-conference women's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. Junior Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) tallied five goals, six groundballs, three caused turnovers, and two draw controls for the Engineers while Julia Kelley powered the Hawks with four goals and three assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT generated four goals in the first quarter capped by a blast from junior Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) that was set up by senior Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio). The scoring effort resulted in the 100th career point for Flusche and the 200th for Rabenold.

- The Engineers continued to pull away courtesy of goals by sophomore Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.), sophomore Nina Petulla (Natick, Mass.), and Pyon during the first five minutes of the second stanza. Kelley ended the shutout at the 7:02 mark when Roger Williams was down a player and Kimmy Creegan quickly followed with an unassisted goal that made the score 7-2. MIT replied with four goals in a span of 2:17, however, Creegan found the back of the net with just over a minute remaining.

- The Hawks trimmed their deficit to 11-5 as Kelley earned an assist on Creegan's third goal of the day and then she set up Allie Shamberger for a player-advantage goal with 10:13 on the clock. Pyon buried a free-position shot almost a minute later, but the Shamberger-Kelley connection resulted in another player-advantage goal. Pyon countered by increasing the Engineers' cushion to 13-6 late in the frame.

- MIT's lead grew during the first 1:13 of the fourth quarter courtesy of a Thomas free-position goal and a solo effort by senior Meredith Arterburn (Cooksville, Md.). Roger Williams responded with three consecutive goals, including back-to-back markers by Kelley, to narrow the gap to 15-9 with 7:46 left to play. The Engineers created some breathing room when sophomore Monica Petulla (Natick, Mass.) found Thomas for a player-advantage goal with 5:04 to go and then Thomas earned an assist on a strike by first-year Laura Day (Saybrook, Conn.) exactly 33 seconds later. Creegan and Kelley provided the final goals of the day, resulting in the 17-11 score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Thomas finished with three goals and three assists while Arterburn posted two goals, two groundballs, and two draw controls. Monica Petulla recorded three draw controls to go along with one goal and one assist as sophomore Molly Dulde (Delafield, Wis.) collected nine saves.

- Creegan amassed four goals, five draw controls, and three caused turnovers while Miranda Hayes corralled a game-high seven draw controls, followed by six from Karli Chapin. Grace Rocheleau contributed four groundballs and three caused turnovers as Zoey Cormican made seven saves in the first half. Caroline Roach closed out the game with four saves.

- Rabenold currently ranks seventh all-time at MIT in career points while Flusche became the 25th player in program history to reach 100 career points.

UP NEXT:
