The Lead: The No. 20 MIT women's lacrosse team scored twice during the first 52 seconds of play and never looked back as it cruised to a 20-3 victory over Bridgewater State University on Friday afternoon. One of three players to produce five points, sophomore
Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) tallied three goals, two assists, three draw controls, and two groundballs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Flusche opened the scoring 21 seconds into the game and then sophomore
Monica Petulla (Natick, Mass.) redirected a feed from senior
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) 31 seconds later. Junior
Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) increased MIT's lead with back-to-back goals, giving sophomore
Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) her second and third assists of the game. Bridgewater State ended the shutout at the 8:20 mark and cut its deficit in half almost three minutes later. This was as close as it would get as the Engineers rattled off three goals during the final 3:16 of the frame to build a 7-2 advantage. Junior
Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) bookended the spurt with player-advantage goals and earned an assist on a blast by
Gwen Flusche.
- MIT continued to pull away as it generated 10 unanswered goals spanning the second and third quarters.
- The Bears ended their scoring drought 1:23 into the fourth quarter, making the score 17-3. The Engineers registered unassisted goals by first-year
Jillian Butler (Brecksville, Ohio), sophomore
Nina Petulla (Natick, Mass.), and Pyon during the final 5:41 of regulation to wrap up the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Pyon totaled four goals, one assist, and five draw controls as Thomas produced one goal and four assists.
Julianne Flusche posted four goals and four groundballs while
Monica Petulla contributed two groundballs, two draw controls, and two caused turnovers. Senior
Katie Bell (Radnor, Pa.) and sophomore
Annica Lam (Livingston, N.J.) both recorded two groundballs and two caused turnovers.
- In net, sophomore
Molly Dulde (Delafield, Wis.) made two saves in the first quarter while first-year
Ashton Flather (Ipswich, Mass.) turned away three shots in the second quarter. First-year
Christina Fradella (Massapequa, N.Y.) closed out the game for MIT as notched two saves in the second half.
