The Lead: The No. 15 MIT women's lacrosse team rattled off 10 straight goals en route to a 19-6 victory over Salve Regina University in a NEWMAC game on Saturday. Senior
Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) amassed seven goals, four assists, four groundballs, four draw controls, and three caused turnovers for the Engineers.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MIT generated three goals in the first 1:12 of action as first-year
Jillian Butler (Brecksville, Ohio), Rabenold, and sophomore
Nina Petulla (Natick, Mass.) each found the back of the net. Salve Regina got on the board at the 11:44 mark, but the Engineers added goals by Butler, junior
Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.), and Rabenold to build a 6-1 lead. The Seahawks provided the final goal of the frame with just over three minutes remaining.
- Salve Regina scored exactly 1:08 into the second stanza, kicking off an exchange of goals that moved the score to 7-4 with 6:25 on the clock. MIT responded with three goals during the final 2:47 of the period as Rabenold buried a player-advantage goal, which was replicated by sophomore
Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.), who then redirected a feed from Rabenold.
- Thomas carried the momentum into the third quarter as she generated all three of the Engineers' goals, two of which were assisted by Rabenold, increasing the advantage to 13-4.
- MIT continued to pull away as it posted four more goals, three by Rabenold and one from sophomore
Monica Petulla (Natick, Mass.) that was set up by
Nina Petulla. The Seahawks ended their scoring drought with 5:55 left to play, which led to both teams trading goals down the stretch for the 19-6 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Thomas tallied five goals, two assists, and two groundballs while
Monica Petulla posted five groundballs, two goals, and one assist.
Nina Petulla and junior
Sydney Hawkins (Franklin, Mass.) both collected four groundballs as
Nina Petulla added one goal and two assists. Butler compiled four draw controls, three groundballs, and two goals as junior
Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) totaled three groundballs, two caused turnovers, and two draw controls.
- In net, sophomore
Molly Dulde (Delafield, Wis.) made three saves in the first half while first-year
Pauline Vien (Brookline, Mass.) collected five saves and one caused turnover during the last 30 minutes.
- This was the first meeting between both programs.
