Baseball Blanks Springfield, 5-0, in NEWMAC Contest

THE BASICS:
 
- Score: MIT - 5, Springfield - 0

- Records: MIT (10-13, 2-6 NEWMAC), Springfield (14-14, 1-7 NEWMAC)

- Location: Springfield, Mass. (Archie Allen Field)

- The Lead: The MIT baseball team used a five-run eighth inning to secure a key NEWMAC victory as the Engineers defeated Springfield 5-0 on the road on Tuesday afternoon. MIT swept the season series from the Pride for the second straight year.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The two teams were locked in a pitcher's duel with a combined four hits through the first seven innings.

- MIT broke through in the eighth when senior Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.) singled to left and came around to score the first run of the day on a single by junior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas). Graduate student Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) singled home two more runs to make it 3-0. The Engineers executed a double steal as senior Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) took home to make it 4-0. Sonandres scored the final run of the inning on a single by junior Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.).

- Junior Brian Rapanan (Gurnee, Ill.) retired the Pride in order in the eighth and worked around a baserunner in the ninth to secure the 5-0 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Senior Karl Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) tossed three perfect innings with five strikeouts. Sophomore Chase Rubin (Arlington, Va.) came in for the next three innings with one hit, one and one strikeout. Rapanan earned his third win with three innings of no-hit ball with no walks and three Ks.

- Tubbs led MIT with two hits, and Sonandres led the way with two RBI.

UP NEXT:

- MIT returns to action tomorrow for a non-conference game at Amherst. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
