Engineers' Bats Lead Baseball Past Amherst, 11-7

THE BASICS:
 
- Score: MIT - 11, Amherst - 7

- Records: MIT (11-13, 2-6 NEWMAC), Amherst (17-6, 4-2 NESCAC)

- Location: Amherst, Mass. (Memorial Field)

- The Lead: The MIT baseball team collected 18 hits in non-conference action against Amherst to defeat the Mammoths 11-7.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Engineers scored four runs in the first three innings including a pair of RBI doubles from sophomore Owen Malone (Portsmouth, R.I.) and senior Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) as well as an RBI bunt from senior Phillip Hood (Grapevine, Texas). Amherst scored three in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to one.

- MIT scored five more runs in the next three innings including four in the top of the seventh. Hood launched a two-run homer to center field, and a pair of RBI singles from senior Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) and sophomore Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) increased the Engineer lead to 9-3.

- The Mammoths scored four runs in the seventh and eighth to cut the lead to 9-7.

- MIT added two more runs in the final inning on RBI hits from Schoenfeld and first-year Jack Finnegan (Essex, Conn.), and junior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) retired Amherst in order in the bottom of the frame for the first save of his career.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Schoenfeld led the way at the plate, going 4-for-6 with two RBI's, including an RBI double. Malone followed right behind, batting 3-for-6. Hood went 2-2 with three RBI.

- Graduate Student Ben Burke (Chelmsford, Mass.) picked up his first victory on the season as he pitched three innings, only allowing one hit and one run. Tubbs tossed 1.2 innings of one-hit ball with one strikeout. 
  
UP NEXT:

- MIT will look to keep it rolling as the Engineers return to Fran O'Brien Field for a NEWMAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 20th when they take on the United States Coast Guard Academy. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
