Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Williams Holds off Men's Lacrosse, 14-12

THE BASICS:

- Score: Williams College 14, MIT 12

- Records: MIT (4-9); Williams (7-6)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium)

- The Lead: Back-to-back goals midway through the third quarter created enough of a cushion for Williams College as it held on to defeat MIT, 14-12, in a non-conference men's lacrosse game on Tuesday night. Senior Heath Nilsen (Carlsbad, Calif.) led the Engineers with a game-high six points on four goals and two assists while Finlay MacKnight posted one goal, three assists, and four groundballs for the Ephs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- After trading goals to start the game, blasts by sophomore Bryce Metalios (Old Greenwich, Conn.) and Nilsen gave MIT a 5-3 edge with 5:17 left in the first quarter. Williams quickly replied with goals by Will Doran and Gavin Timoney to tie the game.

- MacKnight helped give the Ephs their first lead of the night when he scored almost four minutes into the second quarter and then he earned an assist on a strike by Drew Nicholson. The Engineers battled back as three straight goals put them in front, 8-7, with 3:39 on the clock. Williams ended its scoring drought when Doran redirected a feed from Johnson with 49 seconds remaining.

- Both teams found the back of the net early in the third quarter, maintaining the deadlock. However, a solo effort by Calvin Caputo at the 7:56 mark ended the stalemate while a man-up strike from Pearse Glavin exactly 1:10 later gave the visitors an 11-9 cushion. Junior Nick Stiles (New Canaan, Conn.) cut the deficit in half with 2:05 left, but Bjorn Davidson scored over a minute later for Williams.

- Caputo gave the Ephs their largest lead of the night (13-10) after 1:48 elapsed in the fourth quarter. MIT countered with solo efforts by Nilsen and sophomore Garrett Campagna (Lancaster, Pa.), the last with 7:28 remaining. Tucker Catlin connected on a pass from MacKnight for an insurance goal three minutes later. Both teams struggled to maintain possession down the stretch, resulting in the 14-12 final score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Campagna finished with three goals and two assists while Metalios chipped in two goals. Graduate student Andrew Palleiko (Hopkinton, Mass.) collected seven groundballs while senior Luke Chapman (Houston, Texas) produced three caused turnovers and three groundballs. In net, graduate student David Vapnek (San Diego, Calif.) registered 10 saves and three groundballs.

- Caputo and Timoney both had hat tricks while Caputo added four groundballs. Ian Kim won 12 of his 17 faceoff attempts and corralled seven groundballs as Noah Dewbrey went 7-of-13 in faceoffs. Nicholson tallied five groundballs, followed by four from Aidan Housenbold. Goalie Matt Wetmore registered seven saves, three groundballs, and a caused turnover.

UP NEXT:

- Both teams resume conference play on Saturday, April 20. MIT will travel to NEWMAC foe Wheaton College for a 1:00 p.m. game while Williams will host NESCAC rival Colby College at 12:00 p.m.
