- The Lead: The MIT baseball team dropped a pair of NEWMAC games to the United States Coast Guard Academy at home on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE

- After a scoreless first three innings between the two teams, MIT got on the board first with a SAC Fly.

- Coast Guard scored three unanswered runs in the top of the sixth including a two-run double from John Carroll to give the Bears a 3-1 lead. Junior Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.) responded in the bottom half with a solo homer to right field to cut the deficit to one.

- A two-run shot from Charles Red and an RBI double from Nathan Stafford were part of three out of the four runs the Bears scored in the next two innings. MIT would respond back with five in the final two innings with RBI singles from graduate student Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) and senior Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) as well as a crucial infield error which caused extra innings, tied at 8-8.

- Both clubs scored once in the 10th inning and then Coast Guard got RBI base hits from Stafford and Carroll to pull away from the Engineers, 11-8.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Senior Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) went 3-for-6 at the plate with Soqui right behind him, going 3-for-5. For Coast Guard, Stafford was a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate with three doubles and Carroll was right behind him, going 4-for-7.

- On the mound, senior Karl Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) only allowed two hits through three innings. Junior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) fell to 0-3 for MIT. For the Bears, Vito Giordano pitched seven and struck out 11 while Ryan Karman pitched four innings and struck out three, collecting his second win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO

- Back-to-back homers from Soqui and Finch gave MIT an early 3-0 lead after one inning.

- The Bears cut the deficit down to one in the top of the second and Kyle Sonandres' single up the middle brought home two, pushing the Engineer lead to 5-2.

 - A left-field homer in the 3rd inning from Stafford cut the lead down to 5-3. From there, Coast Guard scored three more runs to take the lead for good as the game was called after seven due to darkness.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Soqui collected his sixth home-run of the year while Finch gets his ninth.

- For the Engineers, graduate student Ben Burke (Chelmsford, Mass.) pitched 4.2 innings and struck out six. Senior Saketh Gabbita (Ashburn, Va.) falls to 3-1 on the season. For the Bears, Harrison Milbert pitched all seven innings, struck out eight, and moves to 5-0 on the year.
