Baseball Rolls Past Emerson, 12-2

THE BASICS:
 
- Score: MIT - 12, Emerson - 2 (7 Innings)

- Records: MIT (12-15, 3-8 NEWMAC), Emerson (5-21, 2-9 NEWMAC)

- Location: Northborough, Mass. (NEBC)

- The Lead: The MIT baseball team used a six-run fifth inning to help secure a 12-2 NEWMAC road victory over Emerson on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- MIT hit two home runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Graduate student Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) hit a two-run shot for his first homer of the year, and senior Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.) hit his second long ball of the season.

- Gumbs accounted for the fourth and fifth runs for the Engineers with an RBI groundout in the third and another homer in the fifth. MIT tacked on its sixth run of the day on an Emerson fielding error in the fifth.

- Senior Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) and junior Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.) each had two-run singles in the fifth to increase the Engineer lead to 10-0.

- The Lions got on the board in the sixth to make it a 10-2 game.

- Senior Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) sealed the win for MIT with a two-run double in the seventh to give MIT the 12-2 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Gumbs went 2-5 at the plate with three RBI.

- MIT's 1-4 batters combined to collect eight hits and eight RBI.

- Senior Karl Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) went the first three innings and allowed two hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Sophomore Chase Rubin (Arlington, Calif.) earned his first win of the season as he allowed one across two innings with two walks and one strikeout. Junior Brian Rapanan (Gurnee, Ill.) tossed the final two innings allowing four hits with two strikeouts.

- The Engineers will host Rhode Island College on Thursday, April 25th for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game at Fran O'Brien Field.
