Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 20 Women's Lacrosse Tops Wheaton, 18-6

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 20 MIT 18, Wheaton College 6

- Records: MIT (14-3, 8-2 NEWMAC); Wheaton (8-9, 5-5 NEWMAC)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Jack Barry Field)

- The Lead: A 12-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters propelled No. 20 MIT to an 18-6 victory over Wheaton College in NEWMAC women's lacrosse action on Wednesday night. Sophomore Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) generated three goals and six assists, increasing her season point tally to 102 as she became the fourth player in program history to accomplish this feat. The Lyons, meanwhile, were led by Avonlea Lebeau and Lara Finnie who scored two goals apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Senior Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) put MIT on the board almost three minutes into the game and then Logan Truluck netted the equalizer at the 8:51 mark. The score remained unchanged until Rabenold found the back of the net just over two minutes later, kicking off a string of six straight goals that resulted in a 7-1 lead at the end of the frame.

- The Engineers continued to pull away in the second stanza as they rattled off six unanswered goals, capped by three in a row from Rabenold. During the burst, Thomas earned four assists, while sophomore Monica Petulla (Natick, Mass.) scored twice. Wheaton ended its scoring drought courtesy of Lebeau's free-position goal late in the quarter, making the score 13-2 at halftime.

- MIT outscored the Lyons, 4-1, in the third quarter and then Thomas recorded what proved to be the Engineers' final goal of the night, a free-position shot, that increased the hosts' advantage to 18-3 at the 12:08 mark of the fourth quarter. The Lyons countered with an unassisted goal by Lebeau, a free-position goal from Jessica Chamberlin, and a player-down goal by Finnie.

- Rabenold finished with six goals and seven draw controls as Petulla posted a hat trick and two caused turnovers. Junior Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) tallied two goals, two assists, four draw controls, and three groundballs while senior Katie Bell (Radnor, Pa.) generated three caused turnovers, and three groundballs.
