Engineers' Pitching Fans 10 to Defeat Emerson, 4-2

THE BASICS:

The Lead: The MIT baseball pitching staff struck out 10 batters as the Engineers held off Emerson, 4-2, in a Tuesday afternoon NEWMAC contest. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After four scoreless innings, the Engineers got on the board first in the bottom of the fifth from a passed ball, bringing home sophomore Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel). Senior Tyler Godfrey (Rowley, Mass.) singled up the middle to send senior Kennan Gumbs (New York, N.Y.) home, to give the Engineers a 2-0 lead. MIT added one more in the sixth to stretch it to 3-0.

- The Lions got two on the board to cut their deficit to one after Robby Posio doubled to left and later scored on a passed ball.

- Graduate student Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) doubled down the left-field line to draw in the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth, securing the Engineer victory, 4-2.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
- Godfrey went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Engineers. Senior Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) followed behind, going 2-for-4. Chris Ferara lead the Lions at-bat, going 3-for-4.

- Senior Karl Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) pitched three innings and struck out four, giving up only two hits. Graduate student Ben Burke (Chelmsford, Mass.) secured the win, improving to 3-0 and striking out three. Junior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas.) picked up his first save on the year

- MIT is back home tomorrow afternoon in non-conference action vs No. 1 nationally-ranked Endicott College with first pitch slated for 3:30 pm.
