Baseball Rallies to Defeat Springfield, 4-3

fTHE BASICS:

- Score: MIT 4, Springfield College 3

- Records: MIT (9-12, 1-6 NEWMAC), Springfield (13-11, 0-5 NEWMAC)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Fran O'Brien Field)

- The Lead: Trailing by three runs, the MIT baseball team came from behind to defeat Springfield College, 4-3, in NEWMAC action on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- A two-run homer by Andrew McCarty gave Springfield the lead in the top of the second. The Pride increased their advantage when Luke DiMauro scored on a wild pitch two innings later.

- MIT ended the shutout with three runs in the sixth. A throwing error allowed senior Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) to score from third and then with two outs, sophomore Eitan Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) doubled to centerfield, plating senior Tyler Godfrey (Rowley, Mass.) and sophomore Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel).

- Following a 1-2-3 inning at the top of the seventh, the Engineers generated what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom half of the frame. Graduate student Jake Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) reached on a throwing error, advanced to second, and then scored on a single to leftfield by graduate student Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.). MIT later loaded the bases; however, a fielder's choice prevented the hosts from increasing their lead.

- The Engineers allowed one base runner and struck out three in the next two innings, helping complete the comeback.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Zev Moore went 2-for-3 with one walk while Finch recorded two walks and a stolen base.

- Senior Saketh Gabbita (Ashburn, Va.) picked up the win and improved to 3-0 on the season following three innings of work during which he notched three strikeouts, walked two, and allowed one hit. Senior Karl Meyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded his first save of the year.
