The Lead: Bolstered by junior
Alexis Boykin's (Clayton, Ohio) victory in the hammer throw and a runner-up finish in the 4x400 relay, the MIT women's track and field team claimed third place at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Saturday. This equaled the program's highest finish which occurred in 2010 and improved upon last year's fourth-place performance.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:
- Boykin's third attempt put her in the lead for good as her personal-best mark of 62.50m (205' 1") ranks fourth all-time in Division III. She edged out the runner-up by 0.02m to claim her second straight hammer throw title and fifth career national championship.
- The 4x400 relay, comprised of junior
Marina Miller (Bel Air, Md.), senior
Julia Howarth (Barrington, R.I.), junior
Olivia Dias (East Taunton, Mass.), and senior
Paige Cooksey (Ormond Beach, Fla.), crossed the finish line 3:44.77, just .08 seconds behind first-place Washington University (Mo.).
- Earlier in the evening, Cooksey, a first-time individual qualifier, finished sixth the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.75.
- A first-time qualifier for the outdoor championship, sophomore
Nony Otu Ugwu (Katy, Texas) finished in 14
th place in the triple jump with a distance of 11.68m (38' 4"). The performance resulted in All-America Second Team honors.
