The Lead: After holding off a late charge from the University of Miami to earn the final qualifying spot in the Eastern Open Semifinals to qualify for the Championship Race, the MIT sailing team concluded the 2023-24 season with a 13th-place at the ICSA Open Dinghy National Championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the semifinals, the Engineers earned the final spot to qualify for Nationals with a ninth-place finish. MIT finished just one point ahead of Miami as the Engineers recorded 314 points to the Hurricanes' 315.
- The 'A' Division team of senior Sam Bruce (Annapolis, Md.), senior Jemma Schroder (Menlo Park, Calif.), junior Nicholas Abate (Kemah, Texas), and junior Julius Heitkoetter (Austin, Texas) took eighth with 135 points. They totaled six top-five finishes with one win.
- In the 'B' Division, senior Maks Groom (Seattle, Wash.), first-year Robert Ulmer (Greenwich, Conn.), graduate student Wendy Wu (Andover, Mass,), junior Shayne Bersin (Port Washington, N.Y.), and senior Matthew Elliott (Waterford, Mich.) finished in ninth with 179 points. They had three top-five finishes with one victory.
- In the finals, MIT finished 13th with 392 total points.
- Bruce and Schroder finished in a tie for 16th in the 'A' Division with Bowdoin as each team totaled 211 points. The Bears took 15th based on the number of high-place (1) finishes. The Engineers finished with four top-five finishes.
- In the 'B' Division, Groom and Wu finished in 12th with 181 points. They finished just one point behind Roger Williams for 11th. They earned eight top-ten finishes.
