No. 11 Women’s Soccer Nets Three First Half Goals in 3-0 win over Gordon

CAMBRIDGE, Mass – Seniors Natalie Barnow (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Ashley English (Sheboygan, Wis.) and first year Molly Mascardo (Park City, Utah) each scored as No. 11  MIT women's soccer cruised to a 3-0 victory over visiting Gordon College in the team's season opener on Friday evening at Roberts Field.

THE BASICS

  • Score: MIT 3, Gordon 0
  • Records: MIT (1-0-0 Overall), Gordon (0-0-1 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Barnouw put MIT ahead just 5:40 into the contest, converting on a penalty kick after MIT drew an early foul on a collision with a defender.
  • The Engineers took a 2-0 at the 13:21 mark when English converted on a corner kick, heading a shot directly from corner-taker Sean Luk (Bel Air, Md.) past Gordon junior goalkeeper Emily Bengtson (Anthem, Ariz.).
  • First year Molly Mascardo (Park City, Utah) scored her first collegiate goal at 38:34, sending a strike into the back of the net from 10 yards out after intercepting a failed clearance from Gordon.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Barnouw scored on a penalty kick in the season opener for the second straight season. Last year, her first goal of the season tied the score 1-1 against Brandeis with just two seconds left in regulation.
  • MIT goalkeepers Cassidy Jennings (Sioux Falls. S.D.) and Ava Muffoletto (Kings Park, N.Y.) combined for the shutout, making seven saves. Jennings turned back five shots in the second half.
  • Despite the 3-0 scoreline, MIT only finished with an 11-8 advantage in shots as the Fighting Scots matched the Engineers with six first half attempts.

UP NEXT:

  • MIT will travel to Hartford to take on Trinity (Conn.) at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, September 3.
