No. 13 Field Hockey Defeats Western New England, 3-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.  – Three different players scored for the No. 13 MIT field hockey team in a 3-0 victory over Western New England University on Friday night at Jack Barry Field.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 13 MIT 3, Western New England 0
  • Records: No. 13 MIT (3-1 Overall); Western New England (2-3 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Western New England nearly got on the scoreboard inside the final minute of the first quarter when junior Mackenna Cooke (Old Saybrook, Conn.) found herself in a one-on-one situation with sophomore goalie Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.). However, Zimmer poked the ball away and it was corralled by MIT's defense.
  • Following a series of penalty corners during the last five minutes of the second quarter, senior Alice Zehner (Gladwyne, Pa.) redirected the rebound of a saved shot, giving the Engineers a 1-0 lead with 1:08 on the clock.
  • MIT created some breathing room in the 36th minute when graduate student Katharina Jager (Mettmann, Germany) tapped in a pass from junior Bailey McIntyre (Concord, Mass.) during a penalty corner.
  • Sophomore Ingrid Tomovski (Bosch en Duin, Netherlands) produced the final goal for the Engineers when she dribbled into the arc and sent a shot to the near post in the 51st minute.
  • The Golden Bears almost ended the shutout two minutes later, however, Zimmer turned away a point-blank shot by first-year Tania Evans (Guilford, Conn.).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Zimmer notched one save for MIT while junior Ella Henry (Wilbraham, Mass.) amassed 13 saves for Western New England.
  • The Engineers had the upper hand in shots (28-1), shots on goal (16-1), and penalty corners (14-0).
UP NEXT:
