No. 3 Women's Soccer Falls to No. 22 Tufts, 2-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In a matchup of top-25 teams, No. 22 Tufts scored early in each half to hand the No. 3 MIT women's soccer team its first loss of the season as the Jumbos defeated the Engineers 2-0 on Roberts Field on Wednesday afternoon.

THE BASICS
  • Score: No. 22 Tufts 2, No. 3 MIT 0
  • Records: MIT (6-1-1 Overall), Tufts (4-1-1 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Just 4:25 into the match, Tufts notched the first goal of the game when the corner kick from sophomore Reese Birch (Mission Hills, Kan.) landed in front of the MIT goal where it was kicked away by the Engineer defense. Sophomore Emily Nicholas (Avon, Conn.) collected the ball and lifted the ball over a diving sophomore Cassidy Jennings (Sioux Falls, S.D.) for the score.
  • Senior Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) looked to tie the game up, but she had back-to-back shots turned away by sophomore Gigi Edwards (Menlo Park, Calif.). Edwards turned away scoring chances from Arianna Doss (Houston, Texas) and first year Maeve Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas) late in the half to keep Tufts in the lead.
  • Tufts opened the second half with another quick strike when junior Caroline Kelly's (Southborough, Mass) free kick from right outside the box went into the far corner of the net at 49:31.
  • MIT went on the offensive, but shots from Doss, Rowlett, senior Ashley English (Sheboygan, Wis.) and first year Sasha Ceol (Sherborn, Mass.) could not find the back of the cage.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The Engineers held a 16-7 advantage in shots and put six on target with the Jumbos placing four on cage.
  • Edwards made six saves and improved to 4-1-1 on the season. Jennings turned away two shots and moved to 5-1-1.
