Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 9 Amherst Holds Off No. 15 MIT, 1-0, in Field Hockey

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.  – Junior Justine Liguori (Miami, Fla.) scored 11:31 into the game and it would be enough as No. 9 Amherst College held on for a 1-0 win over No. 15 MIT in a non-conference field hockey game on Wednesday night at Jack Barry Field.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 9 Amherst 1, No. 15 MIT 0
  • Records: No. 15 MIT (4-3 Overall); No. 9 Amherst (5-2 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • During a penalty corner, Liguori corralled a bouncing ball in the arc and redirected to the far post with 3:29 left in the opening frame.
  • Amherst almost added an insurance goal in the 55th minute. During a breakaway, junior Molly Donegan (Wallingford, Conn.) sent a pass from the near side to Agopian who dribbled into the middle of the arc. However, MIT sophomore goalie Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) came off her line and stopped the attempt.
  • During the final 1:33 of regulation, the Engineers were awarded five penalty corners but they could not generate the tying goal.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Zimmer finished with eight saves while sophomore Grace Puchalski (Waxhaw, N.C.) turned away six shots for the Mammoths.
  • MIT had an 11-9 edge in penalty corners, including a 7-2 margin during the fourth quarter.
  • Amherst ended the night with advantages in shots (12-7) and shots on goal (9-6).
UP NEXT:
  • Both teams resume conference play on Saturday, September 28. MIT will host NEWMAC rival Springfield College at 1:00 PM while Amherst will travel to NESCAC foe No. 12 Bates College for an 11:00 AM start.
