SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The No. 6 MIT women's volleyball team defeated Springfield College, 25-14, 25-21, 25-21, in a NEWMAC women's volleyball match on Saturday afternoon. First-year
Julia Tolstova (Redlands, Calif.) led all players with 10 kills and added two blocks for the Engineers.
THE BASICS:
- Score: No. 6 MIT 3, Springfield 0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-21)
- Records: No. 6 MIT (14-0 Overall, 2-0 NEWMAC), Springfield (7-4 Overall, 1-1 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Set 1: Holding an 11-9 lead, a kill by junior Ali Gibbs (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) sparked a 14-5 set-ending run.
- Set 2: Springfield jumped out to an 11-4 advantage, but MIT battled back as a kill by graduate student Consecrata Rozario (Cary, N.C.) tied the score at 17. A kill after its own timeout gave the Pride the edge, however, a block from Rozario kicked off an 8-3 run that secured the come-from-behind win.
- Set 3: The early stages were closely played as there were nine ties and two lead changes. Knotted at 16, a kill by Rozario set off an 8-3 burst. Back-to-back kills kept Springfield alive, but Tolstova's kill clinched the 25-21 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Rozario finished with nine kills and a match-high five blocks while Gibbs registered nine kills on 17 errorless attempts and chipped in three blocks.
- Sophomore Kayleigh May (Camarillo, Calif.) tallied 28 assists, nine digs, and four aces as senior Ella Gragg (Morganton, N.C.) generated eight digs, two aces, and two blocks.
- Junior Daphne Gavros (Bel Tiburon, Calif.) paced the Engineers with 11 digs.
