Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 12 Women's Soccer Edged by No. 6 Tufts, 1-0

ndMEDFORD, Mass. – In a matchup of two top 15 teams, it was the No. 6 Tufts Jumbos who broke through with the game's only goal in the 70th minute to earn a 1-0 win over the No. 12 MIT women's soccer team on Bello Field on Wednesday afternoon. 
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: Tufts 1, MIT 0 
  • Records: No. 12 MIT (8-2-0 Overall, 2-0-0 NEWMAC), No. 6 Tufts (7-0-1 Overall, 4-0-1 NESCAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Sean Luk had a great chance early in the game to put MIT on the board but her free kick at 2:34 was saved by Gigi Edwards. Edwards made another save at the 10:11 mark on a low shot to the left side of the net by Ayla Sumer.  
  • Maren Jones had the lone shot on goal for the Jumbos in the 42nd minute, but her low shot was turned away by Ava Muffoletto as the teams played a scoreless first half of soccer.  
  • The teams remained scoreless until the Jumbos broke through at 69:58 with a goal by Jones who was set up by a pass from Waverly Sumner. 
  • Luk and Chloe Dai had shots in the waning minutes, but the Tufts defense was able to keep them off target as the hosts held on for the 1-0 win.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • This was the first game MIT has not scored a goal this season, and the first since last year's NCAA Second Round match against Colby. 
  • MIT held an 11-7 advantage in shots as both teams put two on target. Both teams also earned four corner kicks. 
  • Muffoletto made one save in her 45 minutes of action. Maddy Noll played the second half for MIT and is now 1-2-0. 
  • Edwards made two saves and moved to 5-0. Jones scored her second goal of the season.  

UP NEXT: 

  • The Engineers will travel to Coast Guard for a 1:00 PM NEWMAC contest on Saturday, October 4 while the Jumbos will head to Trinity on Saturday for a 12:00 PM match.
