Field Hockey Blanks Wheaton, 3-0

NORTON, Mass. – Shealy Callahan recorded a goal and an assist as MIT defeated Wheaton College, 3-0, in a NEWMAC field hockey game on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 3, Wheaton 0
  • Records: MIT (9-5 Overall, 5-1 NEWMAC); Wheaton (7-7 Overall, 3-3 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Following a quiet first quarter that saw neither team record a shot or a penalty corner, both squads found their offensive rhythm in the second quarter. However, it was MIT that ended the scoreless affair with 7.7 seconds remaining in the frame. During a scramble in front of the goal following a penalty corner, the ball made its way through the crowd and was redirected by Callahan at the near post.
  • The Engineers increased their advantage to 2-0 just 1:58 into the third quarter. During a penalty corner, Callahan collected a bouncing ball at the far post and found Janie Thomas who lifted it to the top of the cage.
  • MIT capped the scoring after 1:37 elapsed in the fourth quarter when Sierra Kim dodged several defenders and hit the ball underneath a diving Grace Ferguson.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Maeve Zimmer turned away one shot for the Engineers while Ferguson finished with four saves.
  • MIT led the way in shots (13-7), shots on goal (7-1), and penalty corners (8-4).
