WELLESLEY, Mass. – The No. 15 MIT women's volleyball team defeated Wellesley College, 25-21, 25-17, 25-15, in NEWMAC action on Tuesday night.
Ella Zhou led all players with 12 kills and added 11 digs and two blocks.
THE BASICS:
- Score: No. 15 MIT 3, Wellesley 0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-15)
- Records: No. 15 MIT (21-3 Overall, 9-0 NEWMAC); Wellesley (10-11 Overall, 4-5 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Set 1: Following four ties and four lead changes, kills by Zhou and Eileen Sadati along with a Wellesley hitting error gave MIT an 11-9 edge. After a brief exchange of points, a kill by Ali Gibbs sparked an 8-2 run that resulted in a 20-13 lead. The Blue chipped away at the deficit as a kill brought it within 21-18. Both teams registered back-to-back points until a kill from Jessie Trapp gave the Engineers set point at 24-20. A hitting error extended the frame for the hosts, but Trapp replied with a kill to secure the win.
- Set 2: MIT jumped out to a 7-1 advantage, however, Wellesley battled back as it came within one point on three occasions, the last at 17-16 courtesy of an ace. The Engineers responded with a kill from Zhou which sparked a 7-0 run. A kill kept the Blue alive, but a block by Kayleigh May and Claire Underwood thwarted the comeback attempt.
- Set 3: A 5-1 burst gave MIT a 13-8 lead, however, Wellesley stayed within striking distance as a kill narrowed the gap to 19-15. This was as close as it would get as the Engineers claimed the final six points of the match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Underwood generated nine kills, a .533 hitting percentage, and four blocks while Gibbs finished with seven kills and three blocks.
- Sadati and Trapp both posted seven kills as Sadati contributed eight digs.
- May dished out 36 assists while Daphne Gavros led all players with 20 digs.
