Field Hockey Comes From Behind to Defeat Springfield, 3-2, in Overtime

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Trailing by two goals with 3:45 remaining in regulation, Bailey McIntyre scored twice on passes from Meredith Wu and then Janie Thomas recorded the game-winner with 4:28 left in overtime to give MIT a 3-2 win against Springfield College in a NEWMAC field hockey game on Saturday afternoon.
 
THE BASICS:

  • Records: MIT (7-3 Overall, 3-0 NEWMAC); Springfield (6-5 Overall, 1-2 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The game was a scoreless affair until Hailey Gaydos found the back of the cage for Springfield in the 43rd minute.
  • The Pride increased their lead when Nicolette Morlock converted a penalty stroke just over a minute into the fourth quarter.
  • MIT stayed within striking distance as Maeve Zimmer turned away two shots while Sammi Blocher earned a defensive save.
  • The Engineers ended the shutout with 3:45 on the clock when McIntyre scored off Wu's direct insert during a penalty corner. MIT then scored the same way to tie the game with 2:53 remaining.
  • The Engineers attempted to end the game in regulation, however, inside the final minute a shot by Audrey Oh was blocked and then a bid by Thomas was saved by Sam Orcutt.
  • MIT controlled the action in the extra session as it had a 5-0 advantage in shots and a 4-0 margin in penalty corners. The Engineers ended the stalemate when Drew Hussar sent a long pass that was collected by Thomas in the middle of the arc. After getting past a defender, Thomas went to the near post and placed the ball between Orcutt's legs for the game-winner.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Zimmer collected nine saves while Orcutt finished with 10.
  • MIT led the way in shots (21-13), shots on goal (13-12), and penalty corners (12-2).
UP NEXT:
  • MIT will travel to NEWMAC rival No. 6 Babson College on Tuesday, October 7 for a 6:00 PM game.
