NEWPORT, R.I. – The No. 16 MIT women's volleyball team swept Salve Regina University, 25-15, 25-18, 25-17, in a NEWMAC match on Tuesday night.
Eileen Sadati generated seven digs, five kills, and an ace for the Engineers.
THE BASICS:
- Score: No. 16 MIT 3, Salve Regina 0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-17)
- Records: No. 16 MIT (14-3 Overall, 5-0 NEWMAC); Salve Regina (8-8 Overall, 1-4 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Set 1: Trailing 7-6, a setting error sparked a 17-6 run by MIT. Salve Regina picked up the next two points; however, the Engineers used a kill by Claire Underwood and a hitting error to secure a 25-15 win.
- Set 2: MIT claimed four of the first five points and maintained a small lead as the Seahawks came within three points on four occasions, the last at 19-16 on a hitting error. This was as close as it would get as the Engineers used a 6-2 burst, which featured three kills by Ali Gibbs, to wrap up the set.
- Set 3: Salve Regina jumped out to a 6-2 lead; however, MIT stayed within striking distance until a kill by Kayleigh May kicked off an 8-1 run which resulted in a 19-14 advantage. A brief exchange of points followed, but the Engineers claimed five of the next six points to complete the 25-17 come-from-behind win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Gibbs led all players with 14 kills as she hit .600 while Underwood finished with eight kills.
- Ella Zhou posted a match-high eight digs and added five kills as Sophia Song collected six digs.
- May dished out 27 assists in the victory.
