Football Tops WPI in NEWMAC Play, 19-7

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore Andrew Kulhan rushed for 120 yards and junior Dominic Hess returned a second quarter interception for a touchdown as the MIT football team defeated visiting WPI, 19-7, in NEWMAC conference action on a blustery Saturday afternoon at Henry G. Steinbrenner '27 Stadium.

Sophomore Wyatt Alford recorded 13 total tackles to lead an MIT defense that held the visiting Engineers scoreless on the day, as WPI's only touchdown of the day came on a scoop and score during the final seconds of the first half. MIT seniors Chase Williams and Stephen Schulze also finished in double figures in tackles while Hess continued his astounding run of play with his fifth interception, and second pick six, in the past three games.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 19, WPI 7
  • Records: MIT 4-3 (2-3 NEWMAC), WPI 2-6 (1-4 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • MIT quarterback Shaunak Joshi guided MIT down the field on the opening drive of the game, completing four-of-pass passes, including a 16-yard touchdown pass over the middle to Griffin Patterson to give MIT a 6-0 lead. A good point after touchdown from Luke Pelletier gave the hosts an early 7-0 lead.
  • The defenses dominated the remainder of the half with both teams recording defensive touchdowns to send the game to halftime with MIT leading 13-7.
  • Hess struck first, as a nine-play, 63-yard WPI drive that moved deep in to MIT territory came to a halt when the junior defensive back picked-off WPI quarterback Jack Schuck at the seven-yard line and returned the ball 93 yards to the east endzone. The ensuing point-after was blocked giving MIT a 13-0 lead with 4:46 left before the half.
  • Three straight drives ended in punts before the ball came back to MIT with 15 seconds left in the half.
  • With the host Engineers looking to run out the half, Cole Dillon hit MIT running back Jimmy Conners hard at the line, forcing a fumble that John Lavinio picked-up and returned 35 yard for a score. Alex Nalbandyan's extra point would sent the game to the half with the 13-7 scoreline.
  • The MIT defense came out flying at the start of the second half, as the momentum WPI gained thanks to a first-down pass from Schuck to Atwood was quickly stopped on the next set of downs when a third-down sack from Schulze forced a punt.
  • The game reminder scoreless through the remainder of a third quarter that included an interception from WPI's Jake Robertson on the second MIT drive of the second half. However, WPI was unable to turn the takeaway into points as MIT forced a three-out on the next possession.
  • MIT put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter thanks to the effort from Kulhan and a connection between Joshi and tight end Michael Dennison. Kulhan recorded six carries as part of a nine-play, 67-yard touchdown drive that ended with Joshi finding and outstretched Dennison in the end zone for six. MIT's two-point attempt failed as the hosts held a 19-7 lead.
  • The lead proved to be enough as MIT held WPI on its final two drives of the game, with the final WPI drive coming to an end when Williams tackled Dylan Gallo short of the line to gain to force a turnover on downs.
