Football Rallies for Double OT Road Victory Over Maritime, 30-27

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. -- Sophomore kicker Luke Pelletier hit a 39-yard field goal in the second overtime to lift the MIT football team to a 30-27 NEWMAC victory over Maritime College on Saturday at Reinhart Field.

Pelletier was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts and 3-for-3 on extra points on Saturday, connecting on the game-winner after senior Lucky Deignan's interception on Maritime's second overtime possession sent the ball back to the Engineers. Pelletier also drilled a 37-yard attempt with 1:11 in regulation to tie the score at 20-20 after Maritime rallied to overcome a 17-7 third quarter deficit.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 30, Maritime 27 (OT)
  • Records: MIT 5-3 Overall (3-3 NEWMAC), Maritime 5-4 Overall (3-3 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Following a scoreless first quarter, Pelletier finished off MIT's second drive of the game with a 22-yard field goal that gave MIT a 3-0 lead at 13:23.
  • Maritime countered quickly, moving 77-yards in five plays to take a 7-3 lead when quarterback Will Pickett connected with Nate Casaburi for a 61-yard touchdown pass.
  • MIT countered Maritime's deep strike with an 81-yard touchdown of its own later in the quarter, as Thomas Stueber found Keegan Doody for an 81-yard score on 3rd and 12 to give MIT the lead back, 10-7, at 5:59. The Engineers maintained the three-point edge until halftime.
  • The first MIT drive of the second half moved from the Engineers' own 43-yard line to the Maritime goal line but ended with a turnover on downs. Following a roughing the passer call that moved the ball to the Maritime 31, Colter Mahabir broke off a 29-yard rush that set MIT up at the Maritime two-yard line. However, the Privateers held strong at the goal line to keep the score at 10-7.
  • MIT's defense responded in kind as Chase Fishman forced and recovered a fumble on first down at the Maritime one-yard line, giving MIT a 17-7 lead with his first career touchdown on the recovery.
  • Both teams went three-and-out on their next drives before Maritime found the end zone with its best drive of the day, moving 80-yards over 14 plays to close the deficit to 17-14, as Pickett connected with Casaburi again, this time for a six-yard score with 1:01 left in the third.
  • Maritime scored on its first drive of the fourth quarter to retake the lead for the first time since the second quarter, with Pickett finding Josh Limage to his left for an eight-yard score.
  • The Engineers came-up short on their next two drives, but the MIT defense also forced a pair of Privateers punts to give the offense one more chance with 1:43 remaining.
  • Aided by a 33-yard punt return to midfield from Connor McHale and a pair of Maritime penalties, the Engineers moved the ball to the Maritime 20 before having to call on Pelletier on fourth down. Pelletier then split the uprights from 37 yards to tie the game with just over a minute to play.
  • Maritime used all of its timeouts during a furious 14-play drive in the final minute, but the game moved to overtime when MIT forced another turnover on downs at its own 17-yard line.
  • MIT struck first in overtime, with Stueber finding Doody with a 14-yard touchdown pass to give MIT a 27-20 lead. However, Maritime countered on its attempt, with Pickett finding Limage for the score to tie the game at 27-all.
  • That set the stage for Deignan and Pelletier, as Deignan intercepted Pickett on 4th and 9, and made a bid for the end zone with a 59-yard return, before Pelletier connected from 39-yards on fourth down to win the game in double overtime.

  • The victory guarantees that MIT will finish the season with a winning record for the first time since 2021.
