Barnouw's Brace Sends Top-Seeded Women's Soccer to NEWMAC Championship with 3-0 Win Over Wheaton

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A first half brace from Natalie Barnouw helped send the No. 8 MIT women's soccer team to its third-straight NEWMAC Tournament Championship. The Engineers, the top-seed in the tournament, defeated the fifth-seed Wheaton, 3-0 on Thursday night on Roberts Field. 
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 3, Wheaton 0 
  • Records: No. 8 MIT (19-2-1 Overall), Wheaton (11-8-0 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • After a save by Patrica Bandrup off a shot from Leena Mehendale, Natalie Barnouw put a shot on goal that Bandrup saved, however the rebound went right back to Barnouw who put the ball into the goal at 17:20. 
  • A shot by Mehendale rang off to the post right to Barnouw who headed the ball into the goal to complete the first half brace at 21:12.  
  • Andrea Cummings sent a touch pass to Ayla Sumer, who fired the ball into the far corner of the net to make it 3-0 MIT at the 71:04 mark. 
  • Ali Roche looked to get Wheaton on the board late in the game, but her shot was saved by Maddy Noll as the Engineers took the 3-0 win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Barnouw's two goals bring her season total to 18 and her points total to 49. She is tied for third in the nation in points. She's now two goals shy of the single-season goals record, and three points shy of the single-season points record. She now has 50 career goals to rank tied for third all-time and her 134 points rank third. Barnouw also has seven game-winning goals this season. 
  • Sumer scored her second goal of the year. 
  • Mehendale and Cummings tallied their fourth assist of the season. 
  • Ava Muffoletto played the first 45 minutes to earn the win and improve to 16-0. Noll played the second half and made one save. 
  • Bandrup made eight saves for the Lyons. 

UP NEXT: 

  • The Engineers will host No. 2 Springfield on Saturday, November 8 at 1:00 PM in the NEWMAC Tournament Championship with the winner earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
