Tufts Defeats Women’s Basketball, 79-63

MEDFORD, Mass. – Tufts University put together a 20-7 run in the third quarter en route to a 79-63 victory over the MIT women's basketball team on Wednesday night. Ruth Lanouette led all players with 19 points and eight rebounds while also grabbing three steals for the Engineers.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: Tufts 79, MIT 63
  • Records: MIT (3-5 Overall); Tufts (5-3 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Tufts used an 11-3 run to create a 19-11 advantage before ending the opening frame with a 21-16 lead.
  • The Jumbos maintained their small cushion; however, MIT came within three points on two occasions, the last at 27-24 on a put back by Lanouette at the 3:29 mark. Tufts responded with seven unanswered points, but the Engineers rattled off six straight points to come within 34-30 at halftime.
  • MIT stayed within striking distance as a layup by Mary Lobon narrowed the gap to 37-35 with 5:53 on the clock. The Jumbos countered with their pivotal 20-7 run during the second half of the third quarter.
  • Tufts continued to pull away in the fourth quarter as its lead grew to 71-49 at the 5:58 mark. Despite the deficit the Engineers generated a 12-2 run in a span of three minutes. After some back-and-forth play, both teams traded baskets until Tufts drained a pair of free throws which resulted in a 79-63 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Riley O'Sullivan totaled 13 points and seven rebounds while April Chan registered 10 points and three steals.
  • Lobon dished out a team-high four assists.
UP NEXT:
  • MIT concludes its road trip on Wednesday, December 10 with a non-conference game at No. 3 Smith College at 7:00 PM.
