WORCESTER, Mass. - The No. 9 MIT men's swimming and diving team captured the program's 16th-consecutive and 19th overall NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championship as the Engineers totaled 1334 points with eight event wins over the four-day event hosted at WPI.
For the third straight year the Engineers had the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year as Grant Hu (Allen, Texas) earned the title as he collected two Second Team All-Conference honors to go with a third and fourth place finish.
THE BASICS:
Standings: 1. MIT - 1334 Points, 2. Coast Guard - 1079 Points, 3. Springfield - 717.5 Points
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 1650 Free: Sophomore John Tietjen (Leawood, Kan.) claimed second with a time of 16:09.43.
- 200 Back: Sophomore Aitor Arrese-Igor (Del Ray Beach, Fla.) took the top spot in 1:48.02. Graduate student Aaron Zhu (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished third with first year Grant Hu (Allen, Texas) taking fourth.
- 100 Free: Sophomore Bryce Roberts (Mill Valley, Calif.) finished in second with a time of 45.03.
- 200 Breast: Senior Roderick Huang (Cupertino, Calif.) finished in second with a time of 2:01.68.
- 200 Fly: Sophomore Jason Wang (Brentwood, Tenn.) took second in 1:48.12 followed by Hu in third and sophomore Nathan Zhu (Lexington, Ky.) in fourth.
- 400 Free Relay: Roberts, Arrese-Igor, junior Thomas Wu (Cedar Park, Texas), junior and Eugene Jiang (Baton Rouge, La.) finished in 2:59.88 for second.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Arrese-Igor recorded an NCAA B Cut with his win in the 200 back.
- Huang earned his fourth All-Conference honor in the breast as he had won the event the last three years.
- Wang swam faster than last year's invited time in the 200 fly while Hu recorded an NCAA B Cut in the event.
- The 400 Free Relay time was faster than last year's invited time.

Qualified divers will compete at the 2025 NCAA Diving Regionals from Friday February 28-Saturday, March 1 at Springfield College. The 2025 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships will take place from Wednesday, March 19-Saturday, March 22 at the Greensboro Aquatics Center in Greensboro, N.C.
