Baseball Rallies Past Tufts to Earn First Win of the Season

MEDFORD, Mass. — Junior Owen Malone (Portsmouth, R.I.) drove in three runs, including a two-RBI single in the seventh inning, as the MIT baseball team rallied from an early deficit to defeat Tufts University, 10-7, on Wednesday afternoon at Sol Gittleman Park.

Malone finished 2-for-5, including an RBI double that came as part of a six-run fifth inning for the Engineers. Sophomore Louis Hernandez (Glastonbury, Conn.) was 3-for-4 with two RBIs including a solo home run in the top of the third inning.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MIT 10, Tufts 7
  • Records: Tufts (2-4 Overall ), MIT (1-6 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Tufts scored two runs in the home half of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Senior Ben Leonard (Medfield, Mass.) tripled to left center to score sophomore Ian Robertson (Traverse City, Mich) after Robertson opened the game by drawing a walk against MIT starter Brian Rapanan (Gurnee, Ill.). Leonard then scored on an infield ground out, but Rapanan got a pair of groundouts from the next two batters to end the threat.
  • MIT went in order in the top of the second before Tufts took advantage of an MIT error to extended the lead to 3-0 in the bottom half of the inning.
  • MIT got a run back in the top of the third, thanks to Hernandez's home run, to make the score 3-1.
  • The Engineers left the bases loaded in the top half of the fourth inning only to see Tufts capitalize in the bottom half of the frame, as the Jumbos took advantage in the bottom of the inning. Back-to-back singles to open the inning would lead to Nick Banner (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) scoring from third on a double play later in the frame.
  • Trailing 4-1, MIT rallied all the way back in the top of the fifth inning, scoring six runs on five hits to take a 7-4 lead. Grad student Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) started the rally, reaching first with a leadoff walk and moving into scoring position with a stolen base. Malone then doubled down the left field line to make the score 4-2.
  • First year John Spivey (Saint Louis, Mo.) followed, reaching on a fielders choice before stealing second. Junior Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) then doubled to move both runners into scoring position before senior Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.) doubled to bring home both runners and make the score 4-2. Sochi would also score the final run of the inning, as sophomore John Dwyer (Northport, N.Y.) doubled down the right field line, after senior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) reached on a single and grad student CJ McCarthy (Pawling, N.Y. ) was hit by a pitch, to give the Engineers a 7-4 lead.
  • Rapanan gave way to junior Chase Rubin (Arlington, Va) in the fifth inning. Tufts pulled two runs back in Rubin's first inning of work as senior Cooper Smith (Eden Prairie, Minn.) doubled to center field to drive home a run before scoring on an RBI ground out.
  • Rubin would work the next three innings, giving up just a pair of earned runs to earn his first victory of the season for MIT.
  • The Engineers added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh off the bat of Malone to take a 9-6 lead.
  • After Tufts scored in the bottom of the seventh, MIT capitalized on a Tufts error to score an insurance run in the top of eighth to move ahead 10-7.
