Strong Pitching, Timely Hitting Lead Baseball Past Montclair State, 5-3

MONTCLAIR, N.J. — For the second time in as many games, the MIT baseball team rallied from an early deficit to earn a victory on the road, this time defeating host Montclair State University, 5-3, on the opening day of the MSU Invitational at Yogi Berra Stadium.

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • On the mound, sophomore Mason Estrada (Covington, La. ), junior Cole Foster (Austin, Texas), and senior Phillip Hood (Grapevine, Texas) combined to limited the Red Hawks to just three hits in the contest, with Foster earning the win thanks to 4.2 innings of relief that saw him strikeout five while surrendering only one run .
  • Montclair State took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, as the Red Hawks put together a two-out rally that was capped with senior Marcus Johnson (Cranford, N.J.) delivering a two-RBI double to center field to drive in a pair of runs.
  • MIT replied with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, taking advantage of three Montclair State errors in the inning to tie the score 2-2.
  • MIT then took the lead in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two more runs on three hits and a Montclair State error, to take a 4-2 lead. Grad students Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) and CJ. McCarthy (Pawling, N.Y.) supplied the offense in the inning, with Schoenfeld scoring sophomore John Dwyer (Northport, N.Y.) on an RBI single and McCarthy driving in Owen Malone (Portsmouth, R.I.) after Malone had reached on an error earlier in the frame.
  • Montclair State closed the deficit to one run, 4-3, in the bottom of the sixth, scoring when Z. Stearns made his way from third on a double play ball to short.
  • The Engineers got the run back in the top of the seventh thanks to a long ball from McCarthy. The lead was enough for MIT, as Hood shut the door in the ninth inning to earn the save, only surrendering a two-out hit to senior Matt Shuhet (Mountain Lakes, N.J.).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
