Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 25 Women’s Lacrosse Falls to No. 17 Amherst, 14-8

AMHERST, Mass. – No. 17 Amherst College used a six-goal run that spanned the first and second quarters to create enough of a cushion as it went on to defeat the No. 25 MIT women's lacrosse team, 14-8, on Wednesday night. Junior Nina Petulla (Natick, Mass.) totaled two goals, one assist, one draw control, one caused turnover, and one groundball for the Engineers.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 17 Amherst 14, No. 25 MIT 8
  • Records: No. 25 MIT (1-3 Overall); No. 17 Amherst (2-1 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Amherst opened the scoring after 4:24 elapsed but Petulla buried the equalizer on a pass from junior Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) at the 8:51 mark.
  • A defensive battle ensued until the Mammoths generated four goals during the last 4:26 of the frame. Amherst then extended its lead to 7-1 after a pair of early strikes in the second quarter.
  • Senior Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Pa.) ended MIT's scoring drought when she registered a player-advantage free-position goal with 8:22 on the clock.
  • The Mammoths found the back of the net almost three minutes later; however, junior Annica Lam's (Livingston, N.J.) solo effort made the score 8-3 heading into halftime.
  • Amherst had the upper hand in the third quarter as it outscored the Engineers, 4-1. The Petulla-Thomas connection returned, resulting in MIT's lone goal of the period.
  • The Mammoths scored twice during the first half of the fourth quarter as their final tally, a player-advantage free-position goal, increased their advantage to 14-4 with 7:17 remaining.
  • Despite the deficit the Engineers continued to attack, rattling of four goals during the last 3:06 of action.
  • Sophomore Jillian Butler (Brecksville, Ohio) started the run by connecting on a pass from Petulla. Lam quickly followed with a player-advantage goal while Thomas produced an unassisted marker. Junior Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) capped the scoring with a player-advantage goal that was set up by Pyon.
