Baseball Falls to PSU Harrisburg in Extra Innings, 7-6, at MSU Invitational

MONTCLAIR, N.J. — Demetre Koutras III (Clarksville, Md.) scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eleventh inning to help PSU Harrisburg defeat the MIT baseball team, 7-6, on Saturday at the MSU Invitational at Yogi Berra Stadium.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: PSU Harrisburg 7, MIT 6
  • Records: MIT (2-7 Overall), PSU Harrisburg  11-2 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The game's first batter, MIT grad student Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) ripped a leadoff double to right field. Schoenfeld moved to third on a groundout before coming home when John Spivey (Saint Louis, Mo.) groundout to short. With one run in, junior Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) tripled to center field. However, PSU Harrisburg starter Aidan Bergholc (Holmes, N.Y.) got Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.) to groundout to short to end the threat.
  • MIT starter Matthew Spenner (Darien, Conn.) worked into the fifth inning, yielding just two hits and one run while walking three.
  • PSU Harrisburg tied the game in the bottom of the second taking advantage of the three walks, the third walk to Lucas Floyd (Kutztown, Pa.) allowed Koutras III to jog home from third to tie the score, 1-1. Koutras III had opened the inning with a single to right.
  • MIT moved ahead 3-1 in the top of the sixth inning, opening the inning with back-to-back singles off the bats of Soqui and Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texa). Louis Hernandez (Glastonbury, Conn.) singled to right field later in the inning to score Soqui, while a squeeze bunt from Owen Malone (Portsmouth, R.I.) scored Tubbs with two outs in the inning.
  • PSU Harrisburg charged back in the bottom of the seventh, scoring five runs on three hits as Blaine Waltimyer (Pottstown, Pa.) scored a pair of runs with a two-RBI single to right field and Koutras III delivered a two-RBI double to make the score 6-3.
  • MIT got one run back in the top of the eighth, scoring Tubbs on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Hernandez after Tubbs had doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a ground out.
  • The Engineers rallied all the way back in the top of the ninth courtesy of a two-RBI single up the middle from Zev Moore. Moore brought Schoenfeld and Spivery in to score with the base knock. Schoenfeld was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Spivery doubled with one out to put both runners in scoring position for Moore.
  • The game moved to the bottom of the eleventh inning tied at 6-6. Koutras III opened the frame with a double down the left field line and moved to third following a pair of walks. He then scored on a wild pitch to end the game.
