Men’s Lacrosse Overpowers Clark, 20-8, in NEWMAC Opener

WORCESTER, Mass. – A total of 17 players recorded at least one point as MIT defeated Clark University, 20-8, in NEWMAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday. Junior Garrett Campagna (Lancaster, Pa.) led the way for the Engineers with five assists, helping him eclipse 100 career points.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 20, Clark 8
  • Records: MIT (3-2 Overall, 1-0 NEWMAC); Clark (4-2 Overall, 0-1 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.) opened the scoring when he connected on a pass from junior CJ Sanchez (New Rochelle, N.Y.) at the 9:23 mark.
  • Clark recorded the equalizer less than two minutes later; however, Sanchez redirected a feed from Campagna, resulting in Campagna's 100th point. Senior Nick Stiles (New Canaan, Conn.) increased MIT's lead to 3-1 courtesy of a pass from graduate student Jack McCordic (Medfield, Mas.) with 2:05 left in the period.
  • The Cougars cut their deficit in half eight seconds into the second stanza, but the Engineers responded with five consecutive goals which created an 8-2 halftime advantage. Senior Dylan Nelson (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) kicked off the run and went on to record a natural hat trick.
  • MIT continued to control the action as it outscored Clark, 9-2, in the third quarter. The scoring spree was started by senior Brennan Hoppa's (Hampstead, N.H.) goal that was set up by junior goalie Collin Lung (Lynbrook, N.Y.).
  • The Cougars had a 4-3 scoring edge in the fourth quarter, resulting in the 20-8 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Campagna became the 38th player in program history to record 100 career points and the second this season as Bleil accomplished this feat on February 28 against Western New England University.
  • Sanchez finished with three goals and two assists while first-year Riley Pierce (Vestavia, Ala.) totaled two goals, two assists, and two groundballs.
  • Graduate student Andrew Palleiko (Hopkinton, Mass.) collected 10 groundballs and went 9-of-18 in faceoffs as junior Isaiah Nathaniel (Scotch Plains, N.J.) produced five groundballs and a caused turnover.
