Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Bates; Engineers No-Hit Bobcats in Game One

LEWISTON, Maine – The MIT baseball team swept both games of a non-conference doubleheader versus Bates College on Saturday at Leahey Field.

MIT took game one, 3-0, as sophomore Mason Estrada (Covington, La.) and senior Phillip Hood (Grapevine, Texas) combined to pitch a seven inning no-hitter. The Engineers then rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to win game two, 7-2.

THE BASICS:

  • Score:
    • Game 1: MIT 3, Bates 0
    • Game 2: MIT 7, Bates 2
  • Records: MIT (5-8 overall), Bates (1-9 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE:

  • Estrada earned his first victory of the season with a commanding performance, striking out 12 batters and walking one.
  • First year John Spivey (Saint Louis, Mo.) put the Engineers ahead in the top of the third inning with an RBI double to make the score 1-0.
  • The game moved to the top of the sixth before MIT added some insurance with a pair of runs. Grad student CJ McCarthy (Pawling, N.Y.) opened the frame with a double before advancing to third when junior Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) flew out to right. An intentional pass to senior Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.) put runners on the corners for senior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas). Tubbs then singled to right to score McCarthy. Following a walk to sophomore Louis Hernandez (Glastonbury, Conn.) that loaded the bases, sophomore John Dwyer (Northport, N.Y.) lifted a sacrifice into right to plate Soqui and make the score 3-0.
  • Hood entered in the sixth and pitched the final two innings, working around a two-out walk in the sixth and erasing a one-out walk with a double play ball that ended the game in the seventh.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO:

  • Bates took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two, scoring when Nolan Bibbo (Wellesley, Mass.) singled to the left side to bring home Jack Margiloff (Rye, N.Y.).
  • The Bobcats held the 1-0 advantage until the top of the fifth inning when MIT posted three runs to take a 3-1 advantage.
  • Hernandez reached first on an error to open the inning. He advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on another error, tying the game as Dwyer reached first. Dwyer would come around to score later in the inning when Spivey singled through the right side of the infield. MIT made it 3-0 on a double steal of second and home, as Spivey swiped home after advancing to third on a single from McCarthy.
  • The Engineers extended their lead to 4-1 in the top of the sixth inning thanks to an RBI single from Dwyer.
  • With two outs and Spivey on first in the seventh inning, MIT extended its advantage to 6-1. Zev Moore singled to center field to move Spivey into scoring position. Soqui then singled to score Spivey and move Moore to second. Soqui and Moore then stole second and third, allowing Moore to score on a passed ball and make the score 6-1.
  • The Engineers added one more run in the top of the ninth inning thanks to a two-out single to right off the bat of Hernandez.
  • Junior Chase Rubin (Arlington, Va.) earned the win in game two, pitching five innings of scoreless relief, striking out four and surrendering just one walk. Junior Cole Foster (Austin, Texas) started the game for the Engineers, pitching the first three innings while giving up one earned run.
  • Senior Jimmy Moore (Los Gatos, Calif.) finished off the doubleheader sweep, walking two and striking out two in a one-run ninth inning.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • MIT opened the season 0-6 but has now won four of its last six games, including the last three in-a-row.
  • The 3-0 win in game one and Wednesday's 17-0 win over New England College are the first time that MIT has shut out opponents in back-to-back games since the 2015 season when MIT shutout Suffolk and Curry in NCAA Regional play.
  • McCarthy was 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead MIT in game one. Zev Moore was 3-for-5 with a double in game two. Moore also doubled in game one.
  • Zev Moore is hitting .438 with a .708 slugging percentage in 48 at-bats this season. He has a team-leading five doubles, one triple and two home runs.
