Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Babson, 15-14, in NEWMAC Thriller

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College scored twice during the last 2:11 of regulation, including the game winner with two seconds remaining, to come from behind and defeat MIT, 15-14, in a NEWMAC men's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. Junior Bryce Metalios (Old Greenwich, Conn.) generated four goals, three groundballs, and one caused turnover for the Engineers.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: Babson 15, MIT 14
  • Records: MIT (3-4 Overall, 1-1 NEWMAC); Babson (6-2 Overall, 1-1 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Goals by senior Nick Stiles (New Canaan, Conn.), junior Garrett Campagna (Lancaster, Pa.), and first-year Riley Pierce (Vestavia, Ala.) in the first six minutes gave MIT the early lead. Babson ended the shutout with 6:05 on the clock and then narrowed the gap to 3-2 almost two minutes later. Metalios increased the Engineers' cushion when he connected on a pass from Campagna with 10 seconds left.
  • The Beavers had the upper hand in the second quarter as they outscored MIT, 6-2, resulting in an 8-6 halftime lead. Junior CJ Sanchez (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and Metalios produced the Engineers' goals during the frame.
  • A man-up goal by Metalios cut MIT's deficit in half at the 9:41 mark. However, Babson posted back-to-back goals which made the score to 10-7 with 6:24 on the clock. The Engineers responded with blasts from senior Dylan Nelson (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) and sophomore Hayden Calabretta (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) to once again come within one goal.
  • The first half of the fourth quarter featured back-and-forth scoring as the Beavers went up 13-11 with 8:08 remaining.
  • Despite the deficit MIT continued to attack as a three-goal burst put it in front with 2:59 to go. Stiles started the run by redirecting a feed from Campagna while Nelson and Metalios buried unassisted goals.
  • Babson won the faceoff and scored the equalizer with 2:11 left to play. After a brief exchange of possessions, a turnover gave the Beavers the ball with 26 seconds left which set up the game-winning goal.

  • Pierce posted two goals as first-year Alexander Shen (Atherton, Calif.) generated four groundballs and four caused turnovers.
