Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Comeback Attempt Falls Short as Colby Defeats Men’s Lacrosse, 16-15, in OT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT generated six straight goals to force overtime, but junior Nick Sokolosky (Needham, Mass.) buried the game-winner 53 seconds into the extra session, giving Colby College a 16-15 victory in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon. Juniors Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.) and Garrett Campagna (Lancaster, Pa.) both recorded six points for the Engineers while senior Bennett Goller (Napa, Calif.) generated five goals and three assists for the Mules.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: Colby 16, MIT 15 (OT)
  • Records: MIT (3-5 Overall); Colby (2-4 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Goller scored the first two goals of the game and then assisted on a blast by sophomore Gavin Rothenberg (Westport, Conn.). MIT responded with a 4-1 run as Bleil registered a hat trick and earned an assist on a goal from junior Bryce Metalios (Riverside, Conn.).
  • The Mules opened the second quarter with three straight goals, resulting in a 7-4 lead at the 7:28 mark. In the next 1:23, the Engineers replied with strikes from senior Nick Stiles (New Canaan, Conn.) and Campagna to close the gap heading into halftime.
  • Senior Brooks Rayment (Medfield, Mass.) created some breathing room for the visitors just over two minutes into the third quarter. However, MIT put together a three-goal burst which put it in front, 9-8, at the 8:21 mark. First-year Riley Pierce (Vestavia, Ala.) found the back of the net and then junior CJ Sanchez (New Rochelle, N.Y.) followed with back-to-back goals for the Engineers.
  • Colby responded with six goals during the last 5:20 of the frame to reclaim the lead. The Mules' advantage grew to 15-9 courtesy of an unassisted goal from junior Carter Smith (Weston, Mass.) at the 10:02 mark of the fourth quarter.
  • Despite the deficit MIT continued to attack as Stiles scored the tying goal on a pass from Campagna with 18 seconds remaining in regulation. During the rally, senior Dylan Nelson (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) posted two goals and two assists as Campagna registered one goal and three assists. Bleil had a goal and an assist while Pierce added a goal.
  • Colby won the ensuing faceoff, but it could not produce the go-ahead goal before time expired.
