CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The MIT baseball team hit three home runs to defeat No. 7 Salve Regina, 13-3, in seven innings in game one of a NEWMAC doubleheader on Friday at Fran O'Brien Field. Salve Regina was leading game two, 2-0, in the top of the fourth when the game was suspended. The remainder of the game will be played at a later date.

Grad student CJ McCarthy (Pawling, N.Y.) and senior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) each hit three-run home runs and junior Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) added a solo blast in the fifth inning to lead the Engineers to the victory in game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE

  • MIT starter Mason Estrada (Covington, La.) struck out a pair of hitters in the first inning but Salve put one run on the board, as Shane Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) was hit by a pitch before advancing on an error and scoring on a wild pitch to make the score 1-0.
  • With MIT trailing 1-0, McCarthy picked up Estrada in the bottom half of the inning, lifting a three-run home run to straightaway center after grad student Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) walked and rookie John Spivey (Saint Louis, Mo.) reached base on a hit by pitch. Salve Regina starter Brayden Clark (Beverly, Mass,) struck out the side following McCarthy's home run, sending the game to the second with MIT leading, 3-1.
  • The Seahawks added another run in the top of the second. Tyler Petrosino (Beverly, Mass.) and Brandon Grover (Ashland, Mass.) hit back-to-back singles to tie the contest, as Petrosino moved into scoring position thanks to a passed ball.
  • The Engineers immediately got the run back in the bottom of the second, scoring courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Schoenfeld after sophomore Louis Hernandez (Glastonbury, Conn.) singled and classmate John Dwyer (Northport, N.Y.) doubled to place two runners in scoring position.
  • Estrada cruised through the third and fourth innings, finishing with six strikeouts to pick-up his second win of the season.
  • Senior Brian Rapanan (Gurnee, Ill.) entered in the top of the fifth and went the final three innings for MIT, giving up just two hits and one run while working around three walks to earn the save.
  • Moore's third home run of the season put MIT up, 7-2, in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Engineers then put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs on five hits, none bigger than Tubbs' three-run shot over the the left field wall that made the score 12-2.
  • An RBI single from Williams scored a run for Salve in the top of the seventh to extend the game to the home half of the inning with Salve trailing 12-3.
  • Spivey then walked it off in the seventh, hitting a single to right to score Dwyer and end the game, 13-3 for MIT, after seven innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO

  • Salve had a 2-0 lead before play was suspended in game two.
  • The Seahawks scored a run on a passed ball in the top of the second, and a run on a Matthew Neal (Ashland, Mass.) RBI single in the top of the third.
  • At the time the game was halted, MIT starter Cole Foster (Austin, Texas) was pitching to Elliot Hamilton (Glastonbury, Conn.) with two-out and none on base in the top of the fourth inning.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The game one win snapped a two-game skid for MIT and was the first for the Engineers against a ranked opponent this season (1-4).
  • Both McCarthy and Tubbs finished 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs.
  • Schoenfeld was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks in game on and now stands just two hits shy of 200 in his MIT career.
  • Clark moved to 5-1 on the season for Salve following his first loss of the season.
  • Petrosino had two hits to lead the Seahawks, scoring a run in the top of the second.
