HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO:
- Salve was leading 2-0 on March 28 when play was suspended in the top of the fourth inning. The Seahawks scored a run on a passed ball in the top of the second, and a run on a Matthew Neal (Ashland, Mass.) RBI single in the top of the third.
- At the time the game was halted, MIT starter Cole Foster (Austin, Texas) was pitching to Elliot Hamilton (Glastonbury, Conn.) with two-out and none on base in the top of the fourth inning.
- Play resumed with senior Brian Rapanan (Gurnee, Ill.) on to pitch of Foster. Rapanan walked Hamilton before he was lifted for a pinch runner Nate Ruehs (Plymouth, Mass.). However, MIT catcher John Dwyer (Northport, N.Y. ) threw out Ruehs trying to steal to end the inning.
- The game moved to the top of the sixth inning before Salve doubled its lead, putting together four singles in the inning to take a 4-0 advantage. Ruehs and grad student Brandon Grover (Ashland, Mass.) each had RBI hits in the inning.
- The Engineers got both runs back in the bottom half of the inning to shrink the deficit right back to two runs. Grad student Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) singled to open the inning before trading places on the bases with first year John Spivey (St. Louis, Mo.) on a fielders choice. Spivey stole second before coming around to score when Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) reached base on an error. An RBI single from Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) plated Moore to make the score 4-2.
- MIT would get no closer than the 4-2 score as Salve added a fifth run on a Hunter Yaworski (Brooklyn, Conn.) sac fly in the top of the ninth. The Engineers got two aboard in the bottom of the ninth but senior Andrew Wertz (Dover, N.H.) got Owen Malone (Portsmouth, R.I.) to strikeout to end the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Rapanan went 5.1 inning in relief of Foster, giving up three runs and striking out three.
