Roger Williams Holds on to Defeat No. 21 Women’s Lacrosse, 13-11

BRISTOL, R.I. – No. 21 MIT came within one goal with 2:04 remaining in regulation, but Roger Williams University buried an insurance goal 34 seconds later as it held on for a 13-11 victory in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Friday afternoon. Junior Annica Lam (Livingston, N.J.) led the way for the Engineers with four goals and an assist.
 
THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • MIT opened the game with three goals in the first five minutes as senior Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) accounted for the first and last tallies. However, Roger Williams replied with three goals during the last 5:33 of the quarter to tie the game.
  • The Hawks took a 4-3 lead as they found the back of the net at the 10:49 mark of the second stanza.
  • A defensive battle ensued until junior Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) buried a solo effort with 1:19 on the clock. Roger Williams countered with an extra-player goal 18 seconds later, but Lam evened the score at 5-5 just six seconds before halftime.
  • The Engineers carried the momentum into the third quarter as they produced three unanswered goals. Lam registered back-to-back goals early in the frame and then a free position shot by Flusche increased the lead to 8-5 with 3:25 on the clock.
  • The Hawks ended their scoring drought courtesy of two goals during the last 2:12, sparking a 6-0 run that put them up, 11-8, at the 11:35 mark of the fourth quarter.
  • Lam broke up the rally with an unassisted blast, but Roger Williams notched a player-advantage goal with 6:55 to go.
  • The score remained unchanged until Julianne Flusche connected on a pass from junior Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.J.) with 2:39 left to play. MIT followed this up with junior Nina Petulla (Natick, Mass.) scoring on a pass from Lam 35 seconds later, narrowing the gap to 12-11.
  • The Hawks won the ensuing draw and scored with 1:30 on the clock.
  • Roger Williams corralled the next draw control, but both teams exchanged turnovers down the stretch.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Julianne Flusche finished with four points, two groundballs, and a draw control while Petulla posted two goals.
  • Gwen Flusche tallied five groundballs, three draw controls, two caused turnovers, and two assists as sophomore Jillian Butler (Brecksville, Ohio) contributed three groundballs, two draw controls, and a caused turnover.
  • Sophomore Laura Day (Old Saybrook, Conn.) posted two groundballs, two caused turnovers, and two draw controls while classmate Pauline Vien (Brookline, Mass.) made six saves.
