Baseball Swept in Doubleheader at No. 14 Pomona-Pitzer

CLERMONT, Calif. — No. 14 Pomona-Pitzer collected 31 hits and scored 35 runs over two games to sweep the MIT baseball team in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday at Alumni Field. The Sagehens took the opener, 18-9, and the nightcap, 17-7.

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE:

  • The Sagehens scored five runs on two hits in the bottom of the second inning before exploding for 10 runs on eight hits while taking advantage of two errors in the bottom of the third to take a 15-0 lead. 
  • The big blast in the second inning came off the bat of sophomore Jack Gold (Rolling Hills Estates, CA), a three-run homer that made the score 5-0. Gold also honored in the third inning, one of three long balls in the inning for the hosts. 
  • MIT scored four runs on three hits and a Pomona-Pitzer error in the top of the fourth inning, senior Malachi Soqui (Castaic, Calif.) hit a three-run home run for the Engineers and Senior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) scored on a wild pitch.
  • MIT also scored in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, with junior Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) lifting a two-run home run to center in the fifth.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO:

  • Pomona-Pitzer took control of game two in the early innings, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first before adding four more in the bottom of thee third to take an 11-0 lead. 
  • The Sagehens only recoded two hits in the bottom of the first but took advantage of a pair of walks while sophomore Cooper Berry (Austin, Texas) homered to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning, one of five hits in the inning. 
  • The hosts scored in every inning but the second inning in game two. 
  • MIT got on the board in the top of the fifth when Tubbs doubled with one out before advancing home on a pair of wild pitches.
  • MIT scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning, opening the inning with four consecutive hits. Tubbs drove in two runs later in the inning with a single through the left side that made the score 15-5. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Jack Wiessinger (San Carlos, Calif.) earned the win in game one for the Sagehens, pitching five innings, striking out seven and walking three, while giving up six runs, five earned. MIT starter Matthew Spenner (Darien, Conn.) was charged with the loss for the Engineers.
  • Jake Hilton (Berkeley, Calif.) was the winning pitcher in game two, pitching four scoreless innings while surrendering just a pair of hits and striking out five. Chase Rubin (Arlington, Va.) took the loss for MIT.
  • Gold was 5-for-6 with seven RBI across the two games for Pomona-Pitzer. 
  • JC Ng (Foster City, CA) had three RBI in game two for Pomona-Pitzer, finishing 2-for-3 with two walks.
  • Zev Moore and John Spivey (Saint Louis, Mo.) each had a pair of hits in game one, Moore also scored three runs for MIT. 
  • Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) was 3-for-4 with runs scored and an RBI in game two for MIT. Tubbs finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

UP NEXT:

  • MIT will close out its California trip on Sunday with an 11:00 AM (2:00 PM ET) game at No. 10 La Verne. Pomona-Pitzer will welcome Wisconsin- La Crosse to Alumni Field and 10:00 AM tomorrow.
